Why Does My Candle Tunnel? The Complete Guide to Fixing and Preventing Candle Tunnelling
You light your new candle with great anticipation. The flame catches, the fragrance blooms — and then, over the next few hours, something quietly terrible happens. The wax around the edges stays solid while the centre melts straight down, forming a deep, narrow channel. By the time you notice, half your candle is wasted and the wick is drowning in its own wax pool.
This is candle tunnelling. It is one of the most common candle problems in the world, it ruins expensive candles regularly, and almost all of it is completely preventable. Here is everything you need to know.
What Is Candle Tunnelling?
Tunnelling is when a candle burns straight down the centre, leaving a thick ring of unmelted wax around the inside of the vessel. It gets its name from the shape it creates: a deep tunnel through the middle of the candle, while the outer wax remains solid and unused.
Beyond looking somewhat bleak, tunnelling is also wasteful. Once a candle has tunnelled, the wick becomes increasingly difficult to reach, the flame gets smaller and smaller as it runs out of oxygen, and eventually the candle extinguishes itself with a large percentage of its wax still unused. For a AED 260 luxury candle, that is a meaningful loss.
Why Does Candle Tunnelling Happen?
There are two main causes, and understanding them changes everything about how you burn your candles.
1. The First Burn Was Too Short
This is by far the most common cause. Candle wax has what is called a melt pool memory. On its very first burn, wax will only melt as far out as it went the first time. If you burn a candle for thirty minutes and then blow it out, you have set the wax's memory to a small central pool. Every subsequent burn will follow that same narrow pattern.
The rule is simple: on the first burn, allow the candle to burn until the melt pool reaches the edge of the vessel. This typically takes between one and four hours depending on the diameter of your candle.
2. The Wick Is Too Thin for the Vessel Diameter
Sometimes tunnelling is a manufacturing issue. If the wick is too thin for the diameter of the vessel, it will never produce enough heat to melt the wax all the way to the edges, regardless of how long you burn it. Wick selection is one of the most critical decisions in candle making.

How to Prevent Candle Tunnelling
Rule 1: Never Blow Out Your Candle Until the Melt Pool Reaches the Edge
On every burn, but especially the first, wait until the entire surface of wax has melted before extinguishing. For a standard 350g two-wick candle, this takes approximately two to three hours. Set a timer. It is worth it.
Rule 2: Burn for a Maximum of Four Hours at a Time
Burning too long creates its own problems: overheated wax, excessive fragrance burn-off, and wick mushrooming. The ideal burn time is two to four hours — long enough for a full melt pool, short enough to keep the candle performing at its best.
Rule 3: Trim Your Wick Before Every Burn
Before every burn, trim the wick to approximately 6mm. Use a wick trimmer or scissors. An untrimmed wick produces too much heat, burns unevenly, creates soot, and contributes to tunnelling.
Rule 4: Avoid Drafts
Burning near an open window, air conditioning vent, or fan causes the flame to flicker continuously. A flickering flame heats the wax unevenly and can cause both tunnelling and uneven burn. In Dubai, this is especially relevant — we all run our AC on full year round. Keep your candle away from the vents.
Rule 5: Keep the Lid On Between Burns
In an air-conditioned room, fragrance evaporates from the top of the candle between burns. The lid preserves your scent throw and keeps the candle performing. It is such a small thing. It makes a real difference.
How to Fix a Candle That Has Already Tunnelled
The Foil Wrap Method (Most Effective)
Tear off a sheet of aluminium foil, wrap it around the top of the candle, and fold it over the edges — leaving only a small hole in the centre for the flame. Light the candle and allow it to burn for one to two hours with the foil in place. The foil traps heat, raises the ambient temperature inside the vessel, and melts the unburned wax on the sides. Check periodically and remove once the surface has levelled. Never leave a foil-wrapped candle unattended.
The Hair Dryer Method
Use a hair dryer on low heat to gently melt the outer ring of hardened wax. Hold it approximately 15cm from the candle and work in a circular motion around the edges. Once the surface is level, light the wick and allow a full melt pool to form before extinguishing.
Pour Off Excess Wax
If the tunnel is very deep and the wick is drowning, carefully pour off some of the liquid wax from the centre pool while the candle is burning. Use a paper towel or wick dipper to absorb excess. This lowers the pool level, gives the flame oxygen, and may allow the melt pool to expand outward over subsequent burns.
